PEDIATRIC UROLOGY
Pediatric urology is a surgical subspecialty of medicine dealing with the disorders of children’s genitourinary systems. The most common problems are those involving disorders of urination, reproductive organs, and testes. The common pediatric urological problems include: Bladder control problems such as bedwetting and daytime urinary incontinence, Undescended testes (cryptorchidism), Hypospadias (congenital defect of the urethra, primarily of males; Epispadias (also called bladder exstrophy) is a congenital defect of males; bladder and kidney stones, malformations of penis, urinary obstructions, neurogenic bladder, tumours and cancers of kidneys, repair of genitourinary trauma, malformations and birth defects such as ambiguous genitalia, intersex conditions etc.
- Hypospadias Repair :: Hypospadias repair is a surgery to correct a defect in the opening of the Urethra that is present at birth. The urethra (the tube that carries urine from the bladder to outside the body) does not end at the tip of the penis. Instead, it ends on the underside of the penis. In more severe cases, the urethra opens at the middle or bottom of the penis, or in or behind the scrotum.
- Epispadias Repair :: Epispadias is a rare congenital (present at birth) abnormality that involves the opening of the urethra (the tube from which urine exit the bladder). In boys with epispadias, the urethra opens on top of the penis rather than the tip. The space between this opening and tip of the penis appears like an open book (gutter). In girls with epispadias, the urethral opening is towards the clitoris or even belly area. This results in the external genitalia and urethra not forming or functioning well.
- Pyeloplasty :: Pyeloplasty is the surgical reconstruction of the renal pelvis (a part of the kidney) to drain and decompress the kidney. In nearly all cases, the goal of the surgery is to relieve a ureteropelvic junction (UPJ) obstruction.
- Enuresis (Bed Wetting) :: Enuresis is the medical term for bedwetting during sleep. Bedwetting is fairly common among children. It is often just a stage in their development. Bedwetting is more common among boys than girls.
